The Black Plague started in China in 1346 and moved its way through the trade routes to India. It infected the Black Sea port of Kaffa in 1347. Europe was soon completely infested by the Black Plague. Fleeing ships carried the infected rats to Constantinople (Istanbul) and started to spread to Italy and Marseilles, France. In the winter of 1348 the plague started to head north and west. By 1349 the plague entered parts of the United Kingdom like England and Scotland and infested Switzerland on the way. Ireland, Belgium and Germany were infested in 1349 as well. Then in 1350 Sweden, Finland and Norway were infested. In 1351, it arrived in Kiev, Russia.

1. Took place circa 1340’s.

2. The plague spread to anyone who had contact with the diseased.

3. Universities and schools were closed or even abandoned.

4. Mongols were rumored to have hurdled dead plague victims into the city of Caffa, therefore contaminating the inhabitants. The largest empire to be established was Genghis Khan and they conquered more people and land than the Romans did in a quarter of the time.


5. The diseased had swelling under the arm pits and they died in 3 days.

6. There are 3 different variations of the plague: Bubonic, transferred by infected fleas; septicaemic, transferred by blood; and pneumonic, transferred through the air.

7. People thought that it was it sign from God.

8. Plague occurred when Europe was on the edge of a depression.


9. Killed 1/3 of the population.


10. Flagellants (bands of people who wandered through towns and countrysides doing religious justices) were not approved by the church.
